The Essentials: Visa’s and Must-Knows

Before you enter the dreamy Indonesian island, let’s breakdown the important documents you need.
- Visa on Arrival (VoA): Upon arrival to Bali, you must pay for a Visa on Arrival (approx IDR 500,000 (£24.80). This can be done as you arrive at Bali Airport or you can do this online. If you’re an impatient girlie like me who doesn’t like queueing then an e-VoA may be better. The cost is the same if you were to pay in person. This visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days.
- Passport Documentation: Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity before travelling to Bali. Immigration may also ask for proof of return or onward travels so be sure to keep this handy.
- Travel Insurance: I would highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for any travelling – especially during your solo travels where you’re more likely to get involved in activities and adventures. It’s your safety net for unexpected emergencies or cancelled flights. Be sure to check scooters are covered in the insurance if you plan to use scooters as your mode of transport.
- Phone Sim: Unlike most European countries, you’re phone bill won’t cover Bali without an added cost so make sure you either have a sim card. I would recommend an e-sim with mobi matter, a stress-free, convienent option thats affordable and flexible.
Staying Healthy and Glowing (Because Mosquito Bites are Not Cute)

Travel health is a must!
- Vaccinations: Not mandatory but if you are interested in getting any travelling vaccinations such as Hep A, Typhiod, and Tetanus, make sure you get these done as least 6 weeks before your trip.
- Mosquito Protection: As expected in any hot climate, mosquitoes are present so pack a good mosquito repellent with DEET or picaridin.
- Electrolytes: To avoid any potential stomach bugs or dare I say it – Bali Belly, I recommend taking any form of electrolyte tablet or drink daily.
Flights, Stays and Where to go
Bali is worth the distance I promise! Bali’s dry season is April to October so book within these dates for your best chances of sun!
- Skyscanner: Book your flights in advance using flight comparison tools such as Skyscanner to snag the best deals, you’ll save money and your flights will be free by the time it’s time to fly (girl math right?).
- Accomodation: There are so many great boutique hostel and Airbnb options in Bali with stunning views for a fraction of what you’d normally pay! Do your research to add a bit of luxe to your travels. Canggu and Ubud offer a chill vibe.
Packing like a pro (for a girl who overpacks)

Packing for Bali is quite frankly an art form, so here’s your curated list:
- Clothes: Be sure to pack breezy light clothes and a pair of reliable sandals. Click here for more detailed list of the ultimate style guide for Bali. Leave some room in your bag for the some of the cute Bali market finds including homemade jewellery and crotchet bags.
- Travel Essentials: SPF, a portable charger and a digital camera are a MUST! I love my Canon sx740 hs!
Money and Transport
Let’s discuss Indonesian Rupiah, the currency you’ll need to pay for anything in Bali, from acai bowls to boat trips
- Cash or Card? Cash is handy for street vendors and any market stall purchases however I would recommend a travel card for larger payments such as cafes/restaurant’s.
- Transport: If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that traffic is awful in Bali, with scooters being the main mode of transport. Taxi’s are available if needed for airport transfers although do keep in mind you’ll be stuck in hours of traffic! Apps like Grab or Gojek will be your best friend for safe rides across the island with payments being able to be made via the app.

- Seminyak: A classic spot for boutique shopping and catching a beach club vibe.
